Taj Mahal is built by the Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan in memory of his wife Mumtaz Mahal who died on 17 June 1631 after 17 years of marriage. Taj Mahal stands on the bank of River Yamuna at Agra city of Uttar Pradesh state in India. It is one of the seven wonders of the world.

In the UNESCO's World Heritage List, Taj Mahal has been noted as "the jewel of Muslim art in India and one of the universally admired masterpieces of the world's heritage."

It is made of white Marble and spread over 42 acres. The construction period was between 1632 and 1653. More than twenty thousand artisans and craftsmen worked for Taj Mahal. The construction of the Taj Mahal was committed to a group of architects under imperial supervision, including Abd ul-Karim Ma'mur Khan, Makramat Khan, and Ustad Ahmad Lahauri. Ustad Ahmad Lahauri is considered to be the main designer.

Materials from all over India and Asia were used to construct the Taj Mahal and more than 1,000 elephants were used to transport construction materials. The materials include the saphire from Sri Lanka, carnelian from Arabia, turquoise from Tibet, white marbile from Rajasthan, jasper from Punjab, crystal and jade from China. The white marble is decorated with different types of precious and semi precious stones.

Taj Mahal is known as the finest example of Mughal architecture, a style that is derived by combining the elements from Persian architectural, Turkish architectural and Indian architectural styles.

Best Time to Visit Taj Mahal

  • Try to avoid the summer season. That is the October to March is considered the suitable period to visit the Taj Mahal.
  • Taj Mahal under Full Moon Night, at Sunrise and at Sunset are very beautiful to see. If it possible try to reach here before sunset or sunrise. Night viewing is also possible on the full moon nights. It starts from two days before the full moon and ends two days after. You have to book the tickets in one day advance.

Timings

The Taj Mahal is open from 6am to 7pm to public on all days except fridays and public holidays. There are special rates for sunrise and sunset times.

Air route is the easiest way to reach Agra. You will get flight from the Delhi's Indira Gandhi International airport(IGI) airport, and land at the Kheria airport(domestic flights only) in Agra which is just 6 kms away from the Taj Mahal.
